May 15 (Thu) Adventure and Travel - Trails Club Bicycle Events

About every two years a volunteer steps forward and organizes a multi day bike ride for our club. In 2011 Allen Burrell organized a 180 mile bike trip to the panhandle of Idaho, the Coeur d’Alene Trails. This is a rails to trails path that follows the history of the area through the Silver Valley, The Bitterroot Mountains, the Hiawatha and the old Milwaukee line. Then in 2013, after hearing good things about a Natchez Trace bike ride organized for the TC by Bev & Gary Mohnkern in the mid 90’s, Gerda Eck stepped in to repeat this journey. THE TRACE is a National Park byway from Nashville Tennessee to Natchez Mississippi, recounting history back to the Indian tribes. This path was on a French map in 1720, was designated a National Scenic Route by Roosevelt in the 30’s and is now 444 miles long. This slide presentation will give you an insight of how the bike group of our club spends their vacations, it also includes a 10 minute short film of a "Coast to Coast 3000 mile adventure cycling journey" by Allen, Chaz and Gerda.

Let's Talk About

Hells Canyon Bench Trail to McGraw Creek Hike

5 great people joined us for this 25 mile trek. Weather was sunny, nights were cold. All did well. We arrived Thursday 4:00 PM at Copper Creek trail head and hiked 3 miles in to the junction at Spring Creek with Bench Creek Trail. We camped at a nice little plateau at the Snake River. We then hiked to just short of Squaw Creek a great little grassy stand of trees at about 4000 feet with a small spring. The next morning we day hiked up to the Bluff below the Bench Creek TH. We were unable to go to the TH because of snow. We had great views of elk, deer, eagles and hawks. We took a picture of Wolf print. There was old bear fecal matter. No bears spotted. Next day we traversed the ridge to the south ending at McGraw Cabin. We spent the night by the cabin and the creek. We had a buffett of all the extra food from everyone's packs; Cheetos with Humus, Cheese, Dark chocolate bars, etc. Hiked out on Sunday AM and was back home before dark. Total miles of driving: 696 miles. Linda Conrad Leader.

Ann Dudley receiving - Henry Waespe Award Recipient

And well deserved it was! And flowers to boot!

Other Awards

Gerda Eck receiving the High Leader Award at the banquet. Highly deserving and well earned! Also congratulations to the door prize winners, Pat Garvin, and Alice Wagstaff. They each received a certificate, good for next year’s banquet.

2014 TCO Banquet

The banquet was well attended with 91 registrations, and the social hour was much enjoyed by the group. The tables were decorated with bright yellow tablecloths, and assorted pots of spring flowers, which one person at each table got to take home. Famous Dave’s BBQ was enjoyed along with numerous salads and side dishes. Ice cream bars and cookies were served for dessert. The speaker, David Cobb, showed scenes from Iceland accompanied by music, and the last half of the program, showed his three-week backpack trip from the north shore of Iceland to the south shore. In one of the national parks, there are huts spaced ten miles apart that can be reserved. The hiking looked to be quite enjoyable, but the downside is a lot of wind almost every day.
